Airpots.

So anyone used them ?.
The idea is that roots suck in air from the sides of the pot.
Seen a few vids online recomending these ( mainly manafacturers suprise suprise ) and whilst it makes sense there is no way on earth im paying stoop money for a pot with holes in lol sooooooooooo.

Every tom pot this season appart from the first three ( i mean mfb type pots) ive drilled shedfulls of holes in all the way round the pot.
I ramble on again , point of the post is, this must be benneficial to all potted plants if it works yes ?

My apple tree was in one when I bought it.

I bought the tree from the grower himself and he didn't sell the pots and he was a very knowledgeable (I'm pretty sure I've spelt that wrong ) he seemed a clever chap so I assume they must be good.

The airpots were developed in Australia, as when they were planting young trees grown in pots a high number were dying of or getting uprooted due to the fact that the roots were just growing in a circle if they were pot bound before planting, so the airpot was developed to allow the roots to grow out through the holes and when the root was exposed to the air they were what is termed air pruned, when they were planted the roots were able to spread out.

I bought a few and tried them out. They did produce lots of roots so they do work but they were a huge pain to keep watered and possibly more trouble than they are worth.

I may be wrong but I thought the idea was that when the root came out of the holes, they would self prune themselves (Air Pruning) thereby making new roots..

Yes, that's the way they work. You can also buy fabric pots which do the same thing.

Any update from users of these. Thinking of getting a 70l one for a walnut tree that wont be able to plant for a year or so that has been in a 40l tub for a year

I think that the air pots would be ideal for keeping them for a year as when you come to planting its just a matter of loosening the pot and placing bushes into planting hole, remember to check that the pot base is removed from the base of the plant (saves having to lift it back out) I have several apple bushes planted in to air pots but they were only potted last year, having used them for tomatoes they were fine but I don't have a great problem with watering in this area

Thanks Rary, I will get one for the Walnut. Same here, watering is something I look forward to.
Did read that its worth adding some cable ties around the outside to assist the connectors take the soil weight

Interesting never heard about these until now.

In another thread I mentioned I'd purchased 3 blueberry plants but due to other allotment priorities these would have to go into pots this year.

Will try one in an airpot now to see the results

Look for a forester or tree nursery who plants trees about 6 year old a lot of them grow trees in air pots, I have 6 that I got free and it was from someone who has a tree nursery

I was in The Range this morning and noticed a perforated non slip mat which could be made into an air pot type of planter, you could drill some holes into a 10 inch plastic lid screw 3 small wooden blocks on to the base to create an air space and wrap the mat round the lid secure the mat to the lid with 4 cable ties secure the sides with cable ties if you think its too floppy use 3 or 4 canes tied round the sides as support, you then get a air pot for about £3
