  • Which Kale to Grow ?

OK the wife loves spring greens and I have been growing cabbage with varying levels of success over the last 3 years, but we had never eaten kale before until recently in a restaurant and to our surprise we both loved it.

So my question is which is the best one to grow that will give us that spring green type taste?

Never had a bad one yet, we've tried Dwarf Green Curled, one of the red ones (scarlet I think), Cavolo Nero. All good, all much, much easier than cabbage. Stupid cabbage

My all time fave to grow is Pentland Brig - it's a softer, less curly type than the standard curly kales (although I love those too, and they are the best at standing through winter i find). Hungry Gap is great as it puts on loads of new growth at this time of year just as the other types bolt.... I picked a lovely big bagful tonight for dinner! Both those types have a more 'spring greens' type colour and texture, so might fit the bill.
Cavolo Nero has the best irony kale taste, but I can never get it to grow as big and lush as it is in the supermarket, and the ribs of the leaves get tough. Also, tiny snails hide in the bent over tips of the leaves.
Kale is probably the most useful vegetable on the plot, so I dedicate a lot of space to it every year.

Am I too late to start kale now?

Nope, not too late, get those seeds in soon though, they need to bulk up before winter.

I love cavolo nero/nero di toscana and have about 20-25 plants for winter. Yum! I grow it under enviromesh though, just to keep most of the beasties off.
