I find them much better behaved this way in my small garden.
My Dad said to pinch off the growing tops off the runner beans when they get up to the top of the pole. Is this not what I should do?LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

A MuntyFrame is a structure similar to a goal post whereby the Beans/ Squash or whatever grow up & just hang down making it easier to harvest. There are different variations:

Very clever ideaThanks. I think I might have trouble trying to construct something like that on my own but I might twist OH's arm next year.

My Munty Frame on plot 1A is built using the wall and hanging basket brackets with a 4 ft bamboo structure that hangs over the path
For Plot 23B I'm going to do something like BigmalllyAttached Files

These are the frames I used last year, sort of like 2 A frames in a bed (one down either side, half the width of the bed) but with the outside legs shorter and vertical and the longer inside legs at the centre of the bed sloping to the outside. The beans are planted in the centre of the bed and grow up the canes towards the outside of the bed
Gave space to underplant with squash which sort of worked but this year I may underplant with direct sow french dwarves

Jay-ell, it'd take me a month of Sunday's to construct something even remotely like that ...!!!!!
I like your idea of under planting squash etc though - great use of the space!~~~ Gardening is medicine that does not need
a prescription ... And with no limit on dosage.
