Cumber troubles.

As some will know one of my cumber plants decided to commit suicide last Saturday. When I went to bed on Fri night it looked like pic (1). On Sat morning every thing but the growing tip had gone limp/wilted and the main stem was in a bad way.

Nothing ventured nothing gained I cut off the growing tip keeping the one remaining good leaf. This was placed in a jar of water pic (2).

By Tues it was obviously taking up water and a small leaf had appeared at this stage I added a couple of grains of miracle grow to aid the process pic (3).

Today we have new roots appearing pic (4), so I think we have a chance of saving things.

No they are fairly quick if you catch them early enough. I have played this game before and both won and lost, but thought I might detail it here as it may be of help to others.

Mine have all germinated (all 4 of them) in the large planter they were put in and are slowly growing under a large plastic bell cloche.

Does this make me a Q whisperer?

I have 3 out of 4 germinated, with my problem with the 4th one mentioned in another thread. The oldest one (cucino) is settling into its permanent home in my friend's greenhouse. After a couple of false starts and some gentle stroking in the right direction it has tonight wound 2 of its tendrils round the mesh that it is meant to climb up, and rewarded me with a flower

Another week and things are still improving.

With a good amount of root growth pic (1) I decided it was time to pot up.

I used a pot half full with pre watered compost and spread the roots has carefully as my big fingers would allow pic (2).

Then filled the pot with drier compost to try and protect the stem pic (3)

19 days in and I think we can claim success.

A good healthy looking plant and those roots are just starting to show through the bottom of the pot, we will pot up again on Saturday coming.

One of my cucumber plants started to wilt for no apparent reason so I snipped it off and put it in a shot glass of water this morning. Hopefully it will root successfully.

Check the water level every day and keep it topped up, make sure you keep some where light I use a south facing window sill.

My cucumber cutting developed a good root system so I decided to pot into some compost today and now it's sitting in the greenhouse.

Unfortunately another plant was looking droopy so I cut it and it's now sitting in a shot glass.

I have three plants in total (grown from seed) and so far only one is looking properly healthy. Last year I bought 3 plants and only 1 survived. I wish I knew why cucumbers do this!
