What about planting it somewhere in the woods? At least then it would still be alive somewhere?

Is there any reason why this isn't a good idea?
Ivy has a built in homing device - it will still come back to get you, take over your garden and cause subsidence to your home.

Buy a can of Lynx and a lighter - it's the only way !!!
(or else, we will all be doomed)

People really do feel strongly about ivy then? I had no idea it could evoke such fear, it looks so innocent sitting there.

        *cough*

My Mum grew several ivies in her garden which never took over. I still miss the ivy from our backyard (it's roots were on the farmer neighbour's property and they removed it. And, unwittingly, the clematis it had taken me 3 yrs to train through it. Never forget seeing it sail past the window in the bucket of a tractor...) and it is FABULOUS for wildlife.

        Just sayin'.

Still wouldn't want to have it in a veg bed, though. Would they take to being houseplants?

(The farmers are excellent neighbours and had every right to remove it, for the record. )

1Bee, just picturing the look of horror on your face as you see your lovingly tended clematis waving a tendril at you as it was unceremoniously carted off by your (very wise ..!!!!) farmer neighbour ....

Wildlife? Yes. When I removed the ivy from my shed wall I couldn't believe the huge number of enormous snails dozing away the daylight hours behind it....

I removed some ivy from the back of the house when we moved in 4 years ago. It was planted through the gravel onto concrete. I managed to lift out all ( so I thought) roots. I am still battling with it. I have used every chemical warfare agent known to man on it, and it still keeps coming back. There is also some ivy under the hedge on the drive, just about now when the hedge is in full leaf it's nearly constantly dark under there. It just keeps growing. I leave it alone mostly just keep cutting it back if it comes too far forward. It does make a great weed suppressant. It's even muscled the nettles out.
