Possibly useful for anyone growing Red Emmalie potatoes

I earthed my Red Emmalies up yesterday for the second or third time. Not quite sure which. Either way, my experience is they like to stick shoots out sideways, more so than any of my other potatoes. Unfortunately, I damaged a few of these shoots (no leaves showing but a few minute potatoes on them). Just thought I'd pass on the info in case it's useful to anyone else earthing them up.

On the plus side, the tiny potatoes that were forming were a beautiful colour. A glorious raspberry pink on the outside and a lovely uniform paler version of the same colour inside. Bet they look gorgeous on the plate even if they lose a bit of colour during cooking.

Update:

The Red Emmalies are starting to die back, so I thought I'd dig one up to have a look.

Verdict: very so-so.

The pigment might have looked lovely when they were very small, but spread that about when they're a bigger and they look decidedly anaemic. Taste nothing to write home about. Texture good.

Overall: shan't bother with them next year.

Mine are still growing fairly strongly - though am not keen on the idea of washed-out pink. I'm fairly glad I only went for 3 tubers going on your review!

Washed-out is a good description, certainly of this first lot. Mr Snoop said it was odd eating them: the visual appearance reminded him of the worst type of sausage you can imagine and he couldn't quite square that with the taste and texture.

Maybe the others will be better...
