Glorious here in North Devon this afternoon / evening

Sweated up some doing a bit of weeding, had to sit down with a cider and talk to the blackbirds for an hour.

Lovely and sunny here today. Even the next four or five nights the temp isn't set to drop below 12C which is always good. Between 15 and 18 during the day. Not brilliant but not too bad i suppose.

vague? the only thing more vague than the weather people are politicians, as we have just found out..

'They' (the weather people) are now saying that we have something called a Spanish Plume about to happen.

For us it might mean (notice the 'might') above 30c and bad thunder storms.

Talk of an imminent heatwave is vastly exaggerated. A low pressure system is moving in over the weekend, which will bring warmer temperatures for a day or so with rain in the north. After that, for the next week or so the temperatures in the upper atmosphere are forecast to be a good 5 degrees BELOW normal, leading to cooler than average surface temperatures. After that it might warm up a bit, but still not a heatwave (this can change considerably at this timescale).

A Spanish plume occurs when the high and low pressure systems line up, high to the east and low to the west, in such a way as to suck up hot air from Spain or even Africa. This air has to track across the Bay of Biscay and sucks up large amounts of water, which it tends to dump on us in the form of thunderstorms. The normal track of such events is over France and into Germany, but occasionally the hot air can affect the south east of England and very occasionally the whole country.

Most unlikely ever to happen again at such short range with the improved modelling we now have. In 1987 the concept of a sting jet (which caused the damage) had not been understood. This happens when a rapidly deepening low pressure system develops a hook of cloud in the centre. Low pressure systems have distinct warm and cold regions and the sting jet happens when these become wrapped around each other, causing huge gusts of wind to plummet towards the surface. The 1987 storm is used as a classic example of a sting jet, as in this explanation:

                            • Not so much a Spanish Plume more like a British Plunge................dark, raining and humid.
