To the tune of Tulips From Amsterdam by the godly Max Bygraves.
When it's Spring again,
I'll sing again,
Up to my armpits in mud.
When the sun don't shine,
And the slugs just slime,
Grafefully over the mud.
I will look at my seeds,
and say 'no point in these'
As last year they curled up and died.
But with sighs and rude language,
I'll put up with the deluge,
And like the numpty I am.............re seed and re plan to grow something, just anything.
Tasty!
I have now left the building!
p.s It's raining and I'm bored - can you tell?Last edited by Lumpy; 30-06-2016, 02:52 PM.I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work. Thomas A. Edison

Well I am hoping amateur climatologist Dave King has got it right. Dave use's nature to predict the weather, when migrant birds arrive, when they nest, the height of certain flowers etc, etc, etc.
On the 26th May this year when the Met Office was telling us to expect a warm June he disagreed and predicted a wet and windy month. (he sure as heck got that one right).
His long range prediction is that the warmer weather won't arrive till the last two weeks in July but it will be followed by an extended Indian Summer. We shall see.Potty by name Potty by nature.

Great... the warm weather will arrive during my holidays, just because I won't be here to water the plants. But till now it has been raining non stop. It knocked out the runner bean flowers, I find rotten leaves in my potatoes and wont be planting any lettuce till it warms up as it rots on the spot... As for the strawberries, rot too!

The long range models have done a fair job of the summer so far, which isn't great news. The predictions were for a changeable June with some decent spells with thunderstorms and some low pressure, which is pretty much what we got.
Not quite sure how to say this, but...
The same long range models predicted a deterioration throughout the summer, with July being cooler and wetter than June, and August being worse than July.
There certainly doesn't seem much hope of a change in the next week or so at the very least.A life is like a garden. Perfect moments can be had, but not preserved, except in memory. LLAP. - Leonard Nimoy

Great... June has been all rain, how worse can it get? This doesn't count as a summer anymore! Today I noticed my onions started softening, probably rotting, that's after a months constant rain and on top of that 4-5 spells of torrential rain today. There is nothing edible in my garden, and soon there will be nothing at all, just live leaf rot! How do you cope in the UK?Last edited by Ryez; 02-07-2016, 10:27 PM.

One of the advantages of being forced to grow in containers, good drainage means they don't get water logged and they dry out reasonably quickly. Disadvantages are when its dry they dry out quickly so you have to keep your eye on watering and in weather like this the nutrients can be washed out quickly so you have to feed more often.Potty by name Potty by nature.

That is a good point Potstubsdustbins. Only one of my lettuces survived and it was the only one that I didn't plant in the bed but I planted it in a pot! They do dry quickly though, but I could try adding mulch or water gel? I was thinking that maybe the best way to grow in the UK is inside a polytunnel with open doors so things don't bolt, and an irrigation system. Of course my small garden does not allow for such.
