What do people use to write on plastic labels. I think I have tried everything from pencil to supposedly permanent ink but nothing stays on in the wet. I have even tried painting pebbles with chalkboard paint then writing on them with outdoor white chalkboard paint ... washed off, maybe I should varnish them.

I'm trying the metalic marker pens at the minute so my lables are in gbronze, silver and Gold. Seems to be working so far.

A soft pencil 4B works and doesn't wash off.

I've found by trial and error (more error) that a soft pencil works best. If you can be bothered you can rub it out with an eraser and use it again. Ido as I can't stand waste.

I'm using cut up spread containers (the lip of the container fits perfectly over the side of my square pots) and have been using a permanent marker. We shall see if it works.

I never did find something that lasted until I was bought a Brother P-Touch 1000 see Alans Allotment: Brother P-Touch Label Maker Don't buy the green one you pay more for it because it's aimed specifically at gullible gardeners.

They don't fade and I recover them and use them again. I have even stuck them on weed membrane that has been down for a season and they are still stuck and legible see https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HbGekiSbhWY at 1:50 minutes in

It's funny, the weather washes it off but you can scrub the labels as hard as you like and it stays on! Apparently sandpaper is the way to do it but I haven't tried it (yet).
