Used Sharpie pens for years now bullet tip and had no bother. Cost £1 each or less from C.T.S. Kirkmuirhill near Lanark. Also 175 labels plastic white for £1.75 per packet.
Like to label plants well as when giving the plants away it gives a good impression.

Sharpie pen here, but I do find that it wears off in the wet. I re-use my labels as I tend to grow similar things each year, so I just reinforce anything that has faded or re-write if its washed off completely.

I cut up white ice cream tubs and write on them with a permanent marker. Find them easy to spot and when I have finished with them I put them into recycling.

I use black plastic labels and white chalkboard pens. Some of the labels have been out for 3 years without fading.

Be careful, that ink will disappear in the sun and it's very frustrating not knowing what's what.

Soft pencil for me too.....but when I get my birthday I'm going to get one of those printers (along with some grow lights etc ) love those printed labels!

Surprised no one has mentioned to make sure you write on the .........................correct side of white plastic labels. Then the pencil supplied will be more than adequate.

Oh poop I hadn't even considered sunlight. OK I will have a rethink. Although it might be ok from the sun since the labels are slipped inside the pot with just the upper lip showing. There are some things that I can't have muddled though (science project) so will double/triple label all those using different methods.

I went through a phase of writing on the label twice: once in the normal place and once near the point so that it would be under the soil. That way when the normal writing faded I could still read the underground bit. But then I got the label printer

Soft pencil appears the best for me, tried permanent markers only to find that the permanent bit of the description was overly optimistic.

So far the writing is still there after 8+ weeks and shows no sign og fading or getting washed off or sun bleached.

Always write on the sort of semi-rough side of a plastic label.

Learnt the hard way that permanent marker isn't very permanent in the sun. Another vote for the brother label printers (and you can get the tapes in funky colours )
Posted on an iPad so apologies for any randomly auto-corrected gobbledegook

I use these pens on my home made (usually margarine tubes) labels.
