Looking at the pic on my phone, the 'pinkness' of the fingernail was the main thing that caught my eye - fair play to you.

Anyway, back on topic - judging the size of the bulb, it's a toughy, I'd be inclined to leave for a bit.
No problem at all I used to be anaemic so had really pale finger nails I look at them often now to check if I'm going that way again. Just glad you didn't comment on the wrinkled old knuckles, covered in dirt.

      Bal,
You could pull one of those and see if they have split into cloves..If they have, and you are happy with bulb size, then all is good to pull them as you wish..

I can't see them through my wrinkled old eyes covered in dirt.

I understand you pull the scapes (and use them as they taste really garlicky), wait three weeks, then lift.

          Anyone know different?

I just use judgement really, never measure their time by scapes..

Mine have been horribly hit by allium leaf miner and rust for the second year running. They were looking absolutely amazing earlier in the season but now all the foliage is essentially dead. I lifted about half the bulbs yesterday and they were still quite a good size, I can't help thinking what might have been.

Next year I'm going to try covering them with Environmesh in the spring, see if that helps with the leaf miner problem.

Bal, scapes are like little bulbils that grow on the garlic. Use them in cooking as they are very flavoursome.

And when your back stops aching,
And your hands begin to harden.

Are you sure? I always thought the scape was the big flower spike that hardneck garlic sends up?

Martin, youre quite right, my mistake.

I plait them anyway. The rust fungus isn't going to attack them in storage as long as you hang them up somewhere dry.
