Sowing for Autumn/winter crops

One of the garden seed/plant companies has a couple of veg plug plant offers with plugs to be sent out in July.
My thinking is.............if I sow these seeds now, they should be plug plant size in July.

The offers include

Broccoli Rudolph, Red Spear and Cardinal
Brussels Sprouts
Cabbage (Incl Savoy)
Caulis (white and green)
Beetroot
Leaf beet (Bright Lights)
Mixed lettuce
Leeks
Kale (Black Magic, Reflex and Red Russian )

Time to rummage through my seed stash and see how many of these I have.

Just ordered some more PSB seed as the seeds I have left are old and have germinated yet and I doubt they will now.

According to the back of my old PSB packet it says sow through April and may so it's a bit late but they should be still ok to sow.

I'm toying with having a punt at winter veg although I have half sun. Is that good enough?

I usually "stretch" the sow by dates by a few weeks before and after. - so May becomes mid June

I'm in! I'll have a big patch to fill when the spuds come out which should be mid-late July. I'll have a rummage to see what I've got.

I have cavolo nero, swede, gilfeathers and turnips pricked out into modules, sprouts in pots at plug size and am about to sow more kale and PSB.

Def not buying plugs! Still to go are salsify and carrots then I'm done. *smugface*

Already sown lettuce, PSB and brokali and have enough leeks. Waiting for the spinach to finish before sowing autumn brassicas (pak choi, komatsuna, mizuna and namenia). Late peas (Geisha), florence fennel, late carrots, winter cabbage, and swedes will be sown soon. Winter spinach, chinese celery, spring cabbage, winter salads and winter lettuce will be sown later.

Plug plants? Who needs them

I'm going to have a go at a few different winter veg this year. Psb as always, Durham early cabbage, going to order some black Tuscany kale and going to try some spinach. Plenty of spring greens next year hopefully.

I take it Swedes can be left in the ground to harvest through the winter?

Yes in a normal winter, swede can be cut as required. In a really cold winter, cut before snow gets to thick and store in the shed under an old blanket.
No bought in plug plants here, either

Already sown,
Leeks, Reflex and Dwarf Green kale, Tundra winter cabbage, Romanesco Natalino, I sow a mix of lettuce every 3 weeks.

Still to sow, for greenhouse growing over winter,
Pak Choi, spring cabbage, Rocket (if it doesn't re-grow from self seeding in the greenhouse), Chard, leaf chicory di Triest and winter lettuce & radicchio mix Quattro Stagioni.Leaf salads in boxes

Kale is growing haphazardly, leeks are giving it a go, parsnips are (I am really amazed) looking triumphant.

I have Green in the Snow mustard and some oriental radish to sort out soon but my brassica days are over.

I will cover the turnips with cloches later on (the way it is going next week) to extend their season and buy anything else from the shops.

Beggars can't be choosers.

Already have ottobrino romanesco (autumn heading), nero di toscana kale & piacenza savoy type cabbage seedlings on the go! Will be sowing fordhook giant chard, coquille de louviers lambs lettuce & black Spanish round winter radishes all about July. Turnip glens will be sowed up to about October for outside & gh (also the lambs lettuce). Will be sowing winter spinach august/September to go under cloches. Also have a winter lettuce for gh but can't find the seed packet for which type - help

Also doing experimental late sowings of short peas & dwarf french beans for greenhouse cropping - fingers crossed!

Phew - tired already just thinking of it. Think I might need to get some good waterproofs

Forgot I'm also doing aztec broccoli /huazontle. How big are yours at the moment? Never grown it before - we'll have to keep each other updated on how it's going!
