3am idea!

I've had an idea.

Its a good idea...but then, its half 3 in the morning and I'm on meds so it might be a terrible idea and I wouldn't know

The cape gooseberry plants I overwintered are doing SO well it got me thinking, If I sow some Aji sweet pepper seeds now, don't let them fruit, and then overwinter them...well I get a mega crop next year?

Aji sweets (in a good year) grow to about five feet tall and have literally hundreds of fruit. But I haven't had a good year for ages, there's dull weather, late frosts and deluges of rain every summer it seems.

So tell me, is there a reason why sowing peppers now in midsummerwon't work?
Will the shortening days affect root growth?
Because 18 months growth has got to be better than eight months right?

I think it's the same as overwintering chillies. Some make it, others don't. Ive started a couple of lemon drops in the summer knowing that they won't fruit until the following year. They may get infested with aphids or just curl their toes up and pop their clogs I know Thelma always overwinters a couple of peppers.

There are chilli growers sowing now for this purpose. As said somewill make it some won't . I failed overwintering last year but I hav some late started baby plants now which I'm going to try nurturing. Good luck !!

I'm going to be growing over wintering peppers to see if they mega crop next year, got nothing to lose and you never know it will work or not unless you try it. Besides it gives you some babies to pamper over the boring winter months in the greenhouse.

They are too tender to stay in the Greenhouse through the winter. You will have to ask the Mrs permission to bring them indoors...usually the best part of 6months

The sowing chilli plants in the summer part not the meds or the brilliant ideas....It's exactly as Scarlet says imo....

Some croaked, others got aphids, some made it thru but barely in my case...

Ooh! So are they more tender than the cape gooseberries then (which lived outside in the greenhouse all winter). Maybe it just so mild last year, my geraniums and begonias in hanging baskets all lived and they were properly outside!

So, now I'm thinking it will be harder.
I have no objection to bringing them in but won't central heating and artificial lighting confuse the plants?

Cape Gooseberries over winter fine in the GH....pepper and chillies are another thing altogether!

Coming in the warm etc does confuse the plants. You have to find the right spot for them. I put mine on an East facing windowsill that gets morning sun. Trip, Philthy and a few others use lights etc. though some varieties overwinter much easier than others.
Thelma has good results with her peppers.
