  • Potato info

Hi garden gurus, just about to put my potato's in, well chitted and I'm using those 'grow pods' which are just like big thick reusable shopping bags, using for the first time.

Does anyone know how deep the compost should be to sit them on and then about how much to cover them with? hope that makes sense lol

Also, I have no potato fertilizer, would chicken pellets work?

    Thanks

Personally I fill a 3rd of the bag with compost/soil mix and put my seed pots in then just fill the rest of the bag. The only time I raise them up is if they are in open ground, but that's just me

Chicken poo pellets are OK but go easy with them. If you can make stinging nettle tea that would be good once a week in the first 10-12 weeks.

I use the bags - I fill them about a third full, put the potatoes in and then I usually fill up to two-thirds full and top up to full once the shoots are through. Id suggest at this time of year when they're growing fast (probably super fast if they're anything like mine) that you do as tomatoe says and fill to the top straight away. They're amazing at find their way through!

Put the seed spuds about 1ft deep, pass on the pellets as they could encourage scab.

Noticed they have potato fertiliser in Poundland. May be worth the expenditure? They also had BFB which could be used as an organic balanced alternative.
