I am absolutley dumfounded as to what causes a seemingly healthy plant like this in the kitchen to develop twisted, bubbling and distorted leaves. There are no visible pests. No whitefly or aphids so what can it be ?

Maybe I'm missing something and can't see clearly but it just looks like my basil always does to me
Some of us live in the past, always talking about back then. Some of us live in the future, always planning what we are going to do. And, then there are those, who neither look behind or ahead, but just enjoy the moment of right now.
Which one are you and is it how you want to be?

I agree with Alison, I can't see anything wrong with it. When you pick the growing tips out you often damage a few leaves and they can grow slightly puckered. The rest of the leaves look as they should.
Herb that are used in cooking don't look like the pampered specimen plants that "Monty Don" shows us on TV. If it hasn't got any aphids - just eat it.

Don't worry so much Marb, mine looks just the same ......
Still tastes fine, in fact the plant would be bigger except I added a load of leaves to last nights stuffed tomatoesAttached FilesHe who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame

Just an observation on your picking technique, Marb. You seem to be pinching off the top pair of leaves and leaving bare stem on the plant. I pinch out all the growth (including the stem) down to the next pair of leaves, which is where the new side shoots will grow.
Keeps it looking Tidy, I likes Tidy I does

Good point VC , ours got somewhat tall while Mrs.BB was away, on return she went at it with the scissors, cut out about 6" of top growth & made a sundried tomato & basil omletteHe who smiles in the face of adversity, has already decided who to blame
