    • Maybe it should have been left to grow for longer? My butternuts are just forming now - and they're stripy.

      • You are right VC - I think my sad specimen has been a victim of mildew, massive slug damage and my veg growing apathy.

Oh well there is always next year.

They've had their centres eaten out twice by slugs, so still being alive and growing is a bit of an achievement for them. I'm hoping I might get at least ONE courgette at last this year.
Picked my 4th this evening. It's a 50p bargain from last year's Wy@v@le seed sale, Striata del Italia, and looks like an extremely thin marrow.

Looks like the cucumbers are trying to beat the courgettes! Cucumber sorbet it is....

                  • the smooth skinned cucumber stopped producing 3 weeks ago but the ridged one still has another 3 good sized fruit, so I will save some seeds from that for next year, 6 smooth, 17 ridged, so no contest..

                    • I've noticed a lot of grapes growing the tromboncino. What do they taste like compared to normal courgettes - would you grow them instead of or as well as?

                      • I grew for the first time this year and can't taste any difference. Won't be doing them again; I prefer the small courgettes.

And as for how many cucumbers and courgettes ....... too blinking many. I am being bullied by the blooming things. I have hardly been out of the kitchen dealing with them all and my ankles have swollen like footballs.

                        • I like Tromboncino because they make me laugh. That makes them a must-grow for me!
They also climb with tendrils so are quite economical on space - and they store for weeks/months which courgettes don't................

oh and, did I say they make me laugh?

                          • I've tried a couple of courgettes which were touted as climbers - Black Forest, Shooting Star, Tromboncino, Romanesco, and only the Trombones are actual climbers romping up an arch and a trellis with only a little help at the start to find it - the other three are stake-able at best. I haven't had any fruit yet but I have about 4 growing two of which are about a foot long (how long do you pick yours VC?)

Today I ummed and ah'd a bit as there's a number of courgettes that aren't quite ready and I still have that pile from the other day that I'm working through. I've left them on the plants to grow a bit - even though I now I won't be down for three days and they'll be like small marrows then (the better size for dehydrating to make crisps I think).

I did pick a Small Sugar Pumpkin. I didn't mean to pick it it just popped off. I've got it sitting on the windowsil hoping it will change from green to orange.

Did have a good look over the squash bds - The jack Be Littles are wee little things but perfect for a one person portion, the Uchiki Kuri are looking good and the other Small Sugars are still attached to the plants. Couldn't be bothered to try and trace al the others - I'll wait till the plants die back and try it without the foliage.

My Giant Pumpkins are doing good and getting really big. I'm going to need another freezer as three freezers aren't going to be enough. My sisters bagsied a couple for the family to carve for Halloween so that takes a bit of the load off (no Snadger they're not getting the big ones)

                            So I'm at 117 courgettes
                            1 Small Sugar Pumpkin

The breakdown of the courgettes so far is:-

                            Romanescue 30 2
                            Polo 20 2
