Jeanette carrots no roots

I have failed to get any carrots from a square foot sowing of 16 Jennete sown in April. Growth is varied. Some patheticly small while others have goot tops but nothing underneath, at best a thin, whispy thred about 2 mm thick. I too the trouble of sifting through the soil in the squre foot before sowing making sure it was fine and had no stones, lumps erc. Why would the roots have not developed ? I have NEVER been able to grow a single, decent carrot in ten years

I have plenty of leaf on my carrots but no roots yet, my broad beans are covered in black fly..............it's just that type of year............certainly nothing to lose sleep over.

The depth isn't the problem as the beds are deep.

How soon are Jeannette supposed to be ready for picking?

I sowed three types of carrot on 26 March (Paris Market, Sprint and Cascade). None of them have anything much yet. Maybe you just need to wait a while longer.

12-16 weeks depending on variety IF...yup ...IF.... The weather is reasonably warm in the Spring( especially night time temps)
We had a cold Spring.

Do you reckon - apart from the threat of blight, I'd say the rain/sunshine/humidity of recent weeks has been perfect growing conditions.

Very cold spring followed by a bit of a dry heat wave then torrential rain followed by something a bit more like normality for the time of year round here. My plants are generally confused and it's caused a load of stuff to bolt. Plants like gradual change not this throw a dice and guess what season it might be. We had hail the other day for goodness sake!

You've done better than me .... in March I sowed 4 x 12 foot rows in 3 different beds on the allotment, got nothing .... repeated sowing in April, found only one carrot leaf ..... repeated again in May, got nothing ..... 7 varieties total, not a single carrot to show for it .... beetroot not growing either .....

Sounds like you've been getting better weather in Hull than lots of us, including me.

As silly as it sounds, Hull does seem to be protected by some sort of mystical weather shield. Following the track of rain on the radar maps, it often seems to split around Hull and just slide straight past us, maybe catching us with the edge. We never really seem to get extremes of anything. In part due to us being very low and the much of the surrounding country being much higher and leaving us in a protected pocket. Our weather is just kind of average all of the time. We also seem to have a unique microclimate in our 'East Park' which has several times featured as the hottest place in the country (I have no idea why, perhaps Penellype will explain this one )

Yes, sounds like it - I'm currently laying on my lilo in the pool out my backdoor with nothing but my factor 50 on, supping at a pint of mild and toasting away.
