  • Runner bean leaves brown / rusty at edges

Hi all. Just had a question about some runner beans that are looking a bit peaky at the moment. I grew some runners and regular green beans from seed indoors, and transplanted them outside a couple of weeks ago. They haven't done too much (maybe doubled in height for some), but I've put that down to the awful weather.

However some of the runner beans have looked a bit peaky, with brown/reddish edging to them (see photo). There should be plenty of nutrition in the soil as I created this raised bed fresh this year and it has a mixture of existing soil (taken from under the turf), rotted manure (from garden centre) and enriched top soil.

Could it be magnesium deficiency? Or well they just storm away once the warm weather arrives (if it ever arrives..).

    Many thanks!

You don't say where you are, but if they have gone from a warm house straight into the soil it may be that they just got cold. They will probably be ok, if the top growth is healthy.

Hello Zappa & welcome to the Jungle, I would just removed any diseased leaves. I'm sure they will pick up once Summer arrives...............

Could be a couple of things, bit of wind burn, you put them out just before the bad weather arrived. Could also be nitrogen deficiency which can lead to a reddish tinge on leaf edges.
