Do you need netting because the books and pictures show netting for it to grow up with the stick. Does it help or not needed?

I've never tried mesh or netting. Canes work for me.
The dog has a tendency to try stealing cucs however, loves cuc like her mum (me)

I use the mesh because cucumbers have tendrils which they wind around things as they grow, and I think the mesh gives them more chance of finding something to cling to. The first variety I grew, Vega, had lots of side shoots so the mesh was covered with various branches. Cucino, which I have not grown before, seems more inclined to grow with one main stem (at least for now) so a cane would probably be perfectly adequate.
