I'm embarressed to ask this but here goes. Am I the only person who plants the two lost, lonely, wrinkled potatoes happily chitting where they lie forgotten in their Sainsbury's packet?

Nope - have done that myself and had good results! The problem is that they may introduce infection into the soil, so if you are intending planting them, it is probably safer to put them in a tub.

I don't have much space in the garden so they go in tubs and I'm trying the growbag idea from the forum. I also only buy organic so I figure they can't have too many nasties on them.

I'm trying ORLA (first early) and AMBO (maincrop) for the first time. I got them from the organic catalogue and chose them for thier unusual appearance. Anybody tried them?
Grew some Duke of York last year - very nice.

              IMO
King Edward's are great, but Arran Victory (purple skin/white flesh) are wonderful floury roasters that also mash well and are the BEST !!!
Cara, Desiree, Kestrel and Charlotte are pretty solid performers on our plot, with Duke of York and Arran Pilot favourite earlies

Bramble - Sharpes Express are lovely tasting new tatter, but try leaving some in for a few weeks and they make great floury mash !

This my first year at the tatties I'm growing:
                    Maris Bard
                    Carlingford
                    Rocket
                    Red Duke
                    Sharpe's Express
                    Foremost
                    Swift
                    Lady Christyl
                    Arran Pilot
                    Cultra
                    Anya
                    Pink Fir Apple.
A total of 109 seed spuds, all in pots.
This is NOT a boast- more a confession of insanity.
My first 15 pots, all first earlies, have a few already showing- Red Duke was first, followed closely by Rocket and Swift. These were planted outdoors in pots on 21st. March, and Duke showed just above ground on 20th. April. This in central Scotland. No more than 4" of soil above the sets in planting.

Meant to say: I'll keep notes re. my opinion of each cv.'s culinary qualities, and I'll offer a personal assessment thereafter.
