  • Sweetcorn flattened by wind.....!

My sweetcorn in the last week has taken on a bit of a growth spurt - nice green leaves and a bit of height.

Then today due to very windy/wet weather 6 out of the 15 planted, have been almost flattened.

I gently firmed them in and pulled a bit more soil around them, but will they now carry on growing, or are they doomed...?

You could stake them until they find their feet again?

I will put some posts and string around mine, plus a bit of soil over the loose roots, and they'll be fine, assuming we ever get some sunny weather.
In other countries I've seen the stems earthed up, like potatoes, after a windy day!

This happened to one of mine last year when it was about 4 ft tall but I still got a cob from it,I put a couple of extra inch of compost at the base of the slanting plant, string's handy to hold the plants still too,the root should still be intact just moved a little bit & you've sorted it out firming it all in again. You could give them a high nitrogen feed if they look like they could do with some help in their growth?

My sweetcorn has been in a month and has hardly grown at all. Maybe an inch if I'm lucky, is that normal?

Hasn't helped that we havn't had any long warm periods. Mostly a few good days and then days and days and days of rubbish.

My sweetcorn hasn't grown that much, they do need the sun, days of rubbish are no good for them.

Thanks for your replies ... Sounds like staking, and a bit of earthing up are needed ..... And COME ON SUN!!!

I had a similar problem last season but the cobs had already started to form when a gale ruined things, stalks snapped half way up the plant. Learned my leason this season and staked them immediately they went outside.

If mine ever start growing I might consider staking them but as it stands, I'm not staking 5 inch plants.

Hmmm, know what you mean Scoot - mine are very slow and I was gutted when they were dashed the other day .....
So, unless the weather ever gets any warmer/sunnier and there's any growth progress - this might be the first and last time of attempting to grow sweetcorn ................

Mine got blown over near to harvesting them last year, I used bamboo to support them. This year my brother in laws corn is only 600mm high and it already has cobs and the tassels. Mine don't seem to be taking off like previous years and slugs munched 9 away from on of my two beds

                          Susie! NOOOOO!

You can't give up the ghost on what is one of the best n finest tasting crops on a GYOer's menu!

Freshly picked, smothered in butter, wrapped in tin foil & banged straight on the BBQ within minutes of picking has to be one of the best highlights of any growers season!

                          Quick tip!

Once planted en-block, stake each corner of the bed thier in & put two or three rows of string about 18" apart, as you would "Broad Beans" that way the whole block then helps support each other

Sweetcorn needs a good British summer to produce - we just haven't had that (again) this year. Here in Scotland I gave up trying to grow it outside, but it crops in my polytunnel.
Try again next year, you really just have to hope for a scorcher - but as Deano says, corn is the most satisfying GYO crop of them all!

So, as and when it grows (!!!) I'll do your stringy-around thing to help support them .....
