Susie don't give up on it. I'm in West Sussex. I've had a devil of a time getting sweetcorn to germinate this year. My lottie neighbours say he same. I think even in Sussex it's been a case of to much variation in temperature. So your colder air will affect growth. What I did do was really feed my raised bed prior to transplanting and it's made a difference. Last year my sweetcorn was very disappointing.
I also .. as last year earthed up the stems to encourage roots to grow and anchor. The corn is leaning slightly after high winds but still upright. That really works very well,I can say that from experience.
But don't give up,we all struggle with something each year.
Me... X2 packets of parsnips and not one single seed germinated. Arrrgghh
