  • Tomato succession planting experiment!

I have several well rooted armpits (sideshoots) and no room for any more pots in the GH, nor do I want to plant them outside with blight season upon us.

Time for an experiment Some of the older, early cropping bush tomato plants like Latah look tired, as if they've done their bit, so I've bunged an armpit in beside them, in the same pot. As the new plant grows, or the old one gives up the ghost, I'll cut it down and leave the armpit to take over the space.

AFAIK the armpits are all from cordon toms so should grow above the heads of their neighbouring bush toms.

May work or may not. Nothing to lose and everything to gain

I have also been shoving my armpit pickings (that sounds really gross unless you know what we're talking about!) in the pots & have quite a few coming on so will also give it a go. Mine are all cordons though so not sure how that will work....
    Another happy Nutter...

        Simple minds think alike......

Last week, I put a few Black Cherry armpits behind the Rio Grand bushes, which are just starting to ripen - then I can cut them down. The Black Cherries usually carry on fruiting 'til it's really cold, so hope this works

Succession planting with tomatoes sounds really strange to me .... I have never had ripe tomatoes before the end of July, even if sown in Jan .... I get a glut for a few weeks, then summer is over ....
