  • carry over rust?

    Bad garlic rust this year.
    I'm not sure how well the bulbs are going to store.

    What I need to know now is, does rust carry over on the bulbs to the following year?
    Do I have to buy all new?

    or might I get away with planting a few less affected cloves in pots, mollicoddling them over winter and trying to prevent rust to save my stock?
    I'm rather fond of my garlic which has been saved and saved again....I feel we're old friends now!

    As far as I am aware rust only survives on green growth. I have grown mine this year in poor soil and just given one feed of potash. Thus far I have escaped rust even though the cloves were from last year's crop which was covered with it

      This link tells us they'll be fine next year too;
      "Garlic cloves obtained from diseased plants were planted under controlled conditions, but the resulting plants did not develop rust."
