Heads up for some chilly nights next week

This weekend looks like being quite warm in the south and not bad further north, but at the start of next week the wind looks likely to turn into the north bringing unusually cold air for this time of year straight from the arctic. Minimum temperatures here are currently showing as around 7 or 8 for Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday nights, which is not too bad, but if you live further north or in a frost pocket be prepared to close greenhouse doors or cover up vulnerable plants as ground frost has been mentioned as a possibility.

First of the potentially chilly nights tonight. Predicted temperatures vary depending which model you look at, the highest resolution model (and therefore possibly the most accurate, although there is no guarantee) being the Arpege Arpege charts. The model most commonly used in forecasts is the GFS weather model gfs - united kingdom - temperature low (2m) [base + 6] - zoom - weatheronline.

Lowest temperatures are likely around 6am tomorrow and Wednesday mornings. The Arpege predicts likely minimum around 10 here but much colder further north, the GFS goes for a low of 6 or 7 here but interestingly is not as cold further north as the Arpege. The Met Office is currently on the warmer side. I think the deciding factor will be the amount of cloud - more cloud means a warmer night in general.

They were right about the wind, I have ended up tying outdoor toms in pots to the greenhouse.

Hopefully the heat wave forecast for next week comes to fruition.

still waiting for the "warm" nights to begin to be worried about cold nights, we have had frost warnings for further upcountry, in july/august, so much for summer, the winds are starting to die down a bit now after the weekends gales..

I've shut my growhosue doors today due to the wind. It was really windy last night and i was expecting the worst this morning but they were fine. Went out this afternoon though and zipped them up as the wind was blowing straight into them. They could rip, take off or just blow away if it gets too bad.

I'll probably leave it closed until tomorrow morning due to low temps tonight.

I'm just happy that sweetcorn seems to be standing up to it, and runners now that they've been 'anchored'!!!

Some crazy temperatures being forecast by the GFS for 10 days time. I can't remember the last time I saw a 32 for York. I think that is likely to be a good few degrees above what will actually happen, but it seems likely that some warmer weather is on the way for next week.

Do you work with weather Penellype?
BBC and weather channel don't seem to have picked up on it yet. Not like they ever do! I tend to check the weather often online, and their predictions constantly change. So reading charts like that can be very helpful, thanks for sharing!

There was definitely a 'nip' in the air when I was out this morning - first time in a while since I've worn a fleece AND had it zipped up to under my chin ......

Only 11.3c in GH at 7am ........out at work shortly - so have opened doors so they can breathe, as its a brilliant blue sky and sunny, so guess it's going to get rather warm in there soon....!!!!
