I am working on project with several others and need bit help.
For the project we are taking the diagrams from vegetable garden books,Pamphlet,news papers and converting them all to same format
so they can be looked at by newbies and old timer alike. the conversion of the diagram will be to format that shows several different garden spacing methods but all which have same amount plants of each type found in original diagram as well use a standard production range for vegetable being grown but shown but. the project will as be analyzing the diagrams and pointing out any flaws in them. the results of project will be free posted online so that anyone interested can see the the results posted on project blog.
thank in advance all who choice to contribute.
as the project receives diagrams they will be post in an index so to hopeful repeat contribution of same diagrams over and over can be reduced.

Aside from the copyright issues that have been raised, it would be helpful if you could tell us where you live as requested. Don't worry, we won't turn up on your doorstep hoping for a sleepover!

I'm not sure of the value of comparing crops grown in the UK with those grown in, say, Baltimore.
We wouldn't compare outputs from the south and north of the UK as growing conditions - weather, soil etc are so variable.
In a similar vein, there are those who consider that Square Foot Gardening is the most productive, while others would advocate growing in rows, or containers.

So I'm passing the ball back to you, rollingrock - tell us where you live, how you will overcome any copyright issues and what you see as the difficulties/benefits in comparing international growing plans.

I await your answers with interest.

In scientific research that I do in University, we usually add references when we use material from other books. But when it comes to commercial gardening books, I am not sure if a reference would be sufficient.

Regarding the research you want to do, it is advisable that you look in libraries or buy some gardening books. Either way, scientific research requires meticulous scrutiny into something and experiments. For example a packet of onion seed has a recommended spacing for planting your onions. If you want them to be small you put them closer, if you want them to be big, you put them further, but the weather, nutrition, soil type and location is also a factor, you might have spaced them at max distance but somehow got small onions because some of these other factors were not ideal.

A true experiment will require you to grow your onions at different spacing's under a controlled environment, i.e. in lab conditions. Then you can make some actual quantitative measurements. Saying that you will take gardening diagrams from books and point at their flows sounds like amateur work to me. It might be helpful or it might be not.

When I first got the allotment in October 2012 there was little I could do but plan and think whilst getting the plot clear. So I looked at books and read the back of seed packets and discovered that the recommended row spacing and gaps between vegetables varied considerably.

What I did do was decide that my beds would be 2.4m x 1.2m and then I looked at planting the long way and the short way to see how much difference it made to quantity.

Then I started looking at successional sowing and planning beds for that.

Second Year in I decided I could not handle the never ending weeds and looked at sowing patterns for making holes in weed membrane so I could grow trough it. The reality was I have never grown that many tomatoes in a single bed, but I have used the same pattern for sweetcorn, there again that's the difference between theory and reality.
