  • Getting ready for Autumn Garlic planting..varieties and planting times

Ive had a little trouble the last couple of years growing garlic. Ive had white onion rot and haven't been able to save any cloves for replanting last year I made a new bed - I had reasonable results, though I did get some rust. My elephant garlic usually gives great returns I'm going to try another new patch this Autumn for my garlic. I went to the "Countryfile live" show today and spotted the garlic farm, I often get a few bulbs from them .

Today I picked up some Red Czech, a hard necked Autumn planting garlic, for planting late October. Hard necked garlic throws out the flower spike and are usually ready for harvesting end of June/July.

What varieties of garlic are you planning to plant and when?

No idea what variety mine is - it's a purple hard neck variety we bought a plait of in South France 6 years ago!

Normally plant October / November time.

Also growing elephant garlic, will pop it in at the same time. Looking for a soft neck variety as well as apparently they store longer.
    Another happy Nutter...

I was browsing online for Autumn onion and garlic, but haven't decided yet. Many are marked as Spring/Autumn which makes me weary as the spring ones I planed did not perform well at all. I got tiny bulbs that did not split, and very few leaves. And to be honest, I don't understand how garlic could split if planted in spring, when the idea is that it needs cold weather for this to happen. So really looking forward to see some suggestions here. Any reliable garlic for the wet winters of Cheshire?
