  • how many fruit per plant, squash?

As described do I limit the amount of butternut squash fruits I allow to grow per plant? I have two Hunter Squash plants with many fruits setting do I allow as many as the plant decides or do you guys stick to a limit? It only because I have read people talking about limiting pumpkin fruits....

    Thank you

I don't know! I hope someone will be along soon too tell you let them do what they want. Because that's what I'm doing. it's only my second time growing squash, but only the first year they have set fruit ( very excited). I know you restrict pumpkins if you want a monster.

I think that the recommended number is six per plant. Someone may be along with another number.

I think five for a butternut squash but you have to weigh up how long they have to develop in. This season has been very slow and cold for me, in particular I think I have lacked pollinators in the poly tunnel on some of the really bad days so I've had poor fruit set. They are setting now but I'm wondering how many will fill, might limit one plant to four.

My Burgess Buttercup is going nuts and I'm thinking of thinning the numbers down so I get maybe 10 per plant. Pumpkins I limit to 8 or so (they are quite small type).

Like so much in gardening it's a judgement call - how many weeks growing and ripening do you think you have left compared with how fast they are filling up. I'd rather have less well grown fruits than lots of small, possible under ripe ones.

PS. I just don't have enough time to say hello to everyone as they join so please take this as a delighted to see you here!

Sitting doing a bit of planning on squash and pumpkin patch.

This year I've had a good harvest from my butternut squash plants and was thinking how to improve next year. Just found this old thread and it gives a good indication of what to expect.
