  • Instant gratification.........in the fruit & veg dept!

Wandering round the garden today, browsing on raspberries and tomatoes. I realised that my favourite things to grow are the ones I can pick and eat on the spot - raw, unwashed and needing no preparation.
Show me a magnificent swede or a leafy cabbage and I'm a bit underwhelmed but a ripe strawberry or a crunchy apple is just perfect.

I'm pondering whether a browsing garden is an option.

What are your favourites for browsing? Inspire me

Sugar snap peas, mint leaf wrapped in a stevia leaf, currants in all shades, small achocha, runner beans, radishes, basil, baby courgettes, rhubarb stalk dunked in a sugar pot (or wrapped in a stevia leaf), raspberries, blackberries....you'd think all I do is wander around munching stuff (you'd be right!)

Peas, kale, strawberries, raspberries - in fact any berries, French beans, brassica flowers, toms, chillies, sorrel, mint, radish, unripe gooseberries - so much that I hardly get any ripe ones

Mines peas, toms, any fruit, nasturtium seeds, well really I nibble at anything that doesn't grow at ground level because I like to wash that first.

Sweet potato leaves, beetroot leaves, various seedling thinings ,

No wonder I don't have much of an appetite after I've been down the plot.

Ripe tommies in GH, not many make it back to the kitchen ........ And now the 100's & 1000's are ripening, it's like eating a little sweetie .....and not a single one has made it out of GH, and I'm the only one that goes in there ..........!

Ditto that with the small hanging basket of strawberries ......
And I can munch my way through a whole cucumber no problem...
I have been known to nibble on the odd chilli too ........

Sweetcorn never makes it home. Once I had tasted it fresh and raw with the milky sap running down my chin, I've never cooked a cob since!

I'm definitely a natural nibbler, but it's all pretty obvious stuff, fruit, young beans, peas and I always struggle to leave enough cherry toms to take home. But wow, this thread has opened my eyes to what I'm missing out on: sweet potato leaves, raw kale, nasturtium pods, viola flowers, and so much more... And sparrow's post made me want to grow Stevia to go with my rhubarb. I might be having dinner on the plot tonight!

------------and, does anybody else, when you pick a tommie or cuke or whatever is being harvested, always say "thank you" ....? I do ~ don't want to take them for granted for all their growing efforts...................
