Flopping asparagus

Hi All,

My first year growing asparagus and it seems to have taken fairly well, I've left all the spears to do their own thing. However, once the ferns develop, they seem to be too top heavy, and flop over onto the ground. This isn't necessarily an issue, I know, but aesthetically it looks a bit scruffy. Does anyone stake theirs? Or are the ferns more sturdy as the plants mature?

I always fence ours in with metal stakes then hold them up with a boxing ring type arrangement using strong twine.
