  • Purty purty purty!!!

2 reasons for the gloating noises wafting over from my plot:

    a) Long Red Florence shallots grown from seed. Not one bolted, no onion white rot on plot100 and they are bigger than my onions!

    b) yacon is about to start flowering and, for such a monster of a plant, it has the cutest little flower buds.

Doing a small dance of happiness - what's going well for you so far?

I've just picked 2 bowlfuls of gorgeous blueberries (ate some and froze the rest as there are plenty more) and I'm really pleased with the progress of my blight resistant tomatoes:

The big ones on the left are Ferline, the others are Mountain Magic. Now I just need them to turn red...

Got a knocked down (£70 off!) stand from b&q with three tiers & have been self sufficient in 99% slug free lettuce for over 2 months !

Courgettes particularly prolific this year, more dfb than we can eat, Swiss chard amazing & huauzontle a very pleasant surprise at how tasty it is! First good year with toms for a while to.

Thanks for the thread focusing us on the good stuff!

Oh, & squash seem v happy as well.

Look nice. If you replant the shallots will they multiply next year like shallot bulbs?

        How tall is your yacon?

I guess they would, but Him Indoors has counted them and is happily planning onion-based meals. 'Sides, if I replant them I don't get to play with seeds in the wee dark months.

The yacon is about 3-4ft tall. It's in a 40L pot though, which adds nearly another 2 ft. It's a thing of wonder, I get asked A Lot what it is.

I've a couple of Yacon growing that are about the same height - with mentions on the web of them reaching 8 foot I was starting to get a complex.

I get asked what it is often as well - usually by Snadger.

Bumper harvests of tomatillos and tomatoes so far, for the very first time ever my courgettes haven't been eaten before fruiting (despite, or maybe because of, sowing the seeds on 28th May) (do courgettes 'fruit'?), first time I've grown chilis too hot for my missus to eat, lemon verbena experiment has been a success.

The bit of the courgette we tend to eat is the fruit, even though we think of it as a vegetable. As are tomatoes and peppers whilst rhubarb is a vegetable.

I have learned from experience that pointing this out to my niece makes her head explode as fruit are for puddings and veg for mains.
