  • What Shall I Grow ........

    I have a completely empty bed ........

What can I sow now and leave to overwinter ..............

Was thinking on growing green manures, but if there's something apart from cabbage - (we probably only eat one between us a month!!!) that's edible next spring maybe .....

Hate to see an empty bed ......

(It was where I had onions and garlic growing......)

I've just sown turnips, carrots, radish and beetroot direct in the soil and they've germinated within days.

I'll leave them until they're ready to pull. No idea when that'll be but not too long for radish (which are interplanted with carrots. I used some of those freebie seedtapes!

Hmmm, yes, I've got some of those seed tape things left too .......
I'll have a rummage in me tin..!
I really wanted something to sow and forget ....... nothing faffy..... feelin' a bit lazy!

And me and radishes (and come to think of it, carrots......!) don't seem to get along too well .....

As long as you didn't have any Allium related disease from your last crop, there's nowt to stop you planting some Senshyu Onion Sets in that bed.

My sowing list is currently kohlrabi, corn salad, pak choi, winter spinach and chinese cabbage when it arrives. I've just sown spring cabbage, chinese celery, mizuna and namenia. I grow all these in pots so I have no idea how they would fare over winter in open ground.

I got my bottom into gear this after and sowed (seeds from my tin) :

                    Carrot (tape)
Beetroot (tape) & some golden beetroot seeds
                    Swede
Broad Beans ( actually surprised to find these lurking at the bottom of my tin!!!!!)

So I'll see how they get on .......hadn't got any money to spend on new seeds/sets - am going to have to get onion sets soon though ........ they'll go into SFG beds - oh yes, and garlic .....

                    Thanks for your answers

I've recently sown turnips, swede, radish, carrots, kohl rabi, winter lettuce, pak choi and swiss chard. Have got chinese cabbage to sow and broad beans for overwintering to go in October time I think it is. I'm not sure that all of these things are frost hardy but I can cover if needs be.
LOVE growing food to eat in my little town back garden. Winter update: currently growing overwintering onions, carrots, lettuce, chard, salad leaves, kale, cabbage, radish, beetroot, garlic, broccoli raab, some herbs.

I grew mooli a couple of years ago thinking it was like a turnip. When it was ready I pulled it up, brought it in and looked at it, wondering what to do with it. Then I tentatively tasted a bit to try and get an idea of what it was like. I decided it was a rather radishy tasting radish (I don't like radish) so that was the end of that - I fed it to the worms in the compost bin!
