On this subject -would the cheaper makes mentioned cope with smaller stuff ?

I wouldn't mind one for small branches/twigs, leaves, seaweed, etc.

More than likely the cheaper ones will cope with thin branches and twigs, I am not so sure many of the others would cope with seaweed as when I am shredding green material if it is soft green I have to mix it with drier stuff like cardboard to avoid it clogging up, I have never tried shredding seaweed due to its high moisture content, and if you leave seaweed long enough to dry it crumbles in your hands
it may be a struggle to reach the top, but once your over the hill your problems start.

Cheers rary - I was just curious if it would be worthwhile getting one.

Where I'm going I will have access to seaweed for the first time.

I'll just run it over (with leaves, grass, etc) with the the lawnmower.

Kevin when I collect seaweed I simply spread it over the soil, it will break up quite quickly

I should have stuck to what I said and stopped using a kindle for posting, as most of the time you can't be alter or edit if there is a mistake with the post

If there's any salt on the seaweed would't it cause corrosion of blades etc?

I don't think there would be sufficient salt on seaweed to cause any damage, and if you made a point of feeding some other material through after seaweed it would clean it
