To the left can be seen the 6 foot X 3 foot plate glass mirror ith an oak surround which was in one of the old huts. I couldn't break it up as i'm superstitious so screwed it to the back wall.

        • Afro-Aztec/Inca allotment plan

It was raining this morning so rather than get an early start at the allotment I decided to download some graph paper and have a bit of a play about designing my new plot.

The plan I came up with was originally based on African Keyhole gardens but when I now look at it, it has an Inca/Aztec tapestry look about it.

Plot is roughly triangular and is 98 feet long X 45 feet wide and tapers down to 10 foot wide at point. Gate is at bottom left of sketch.

          Here is my sketch :-

It is drawn to scale and each small square is two foot or 60cm square. The shaded aeas are growing beds.

Bottom left is a sit out area 9 foot X 10 foot
Bottom middle is my summerhouse 10 foot X 15 foot. Bottom right is a raised chicken coop and run. The run will also have a raised IBC with guttering from summerhouse and chicken coop filling it. Under it will be the water trough for chickens which can be filled on demand from IBC.

Next up are four keyhole gardens with a central keyhole garden as well and two beds to the right..

Next up are a couple of 4 foot wide beds followed by a cental 6 foot X 8 foot greenhouse. (I will be re-siting exisiting greenhouse which is quite ornate and will sit well in the middle ) and two beds either side.
Next up is a 6 foot diameter circular pool with frogs and newts hopefully!

There are four more variously sized beds around the pool all framed by paths.

The far end of the plot will have a 6 X 8 shed brought from my other plot. I intend to make it open fronted with an arched front. This will have staging in it either side but I could sit in it if i so wished.
There will be a paved area around the shed for sitting out and a compost bin in the corner.

Well, thats about it really, I will have a rose arch and possibly arbour, wigwams and trellises to give some added height and soft fruit will probably be grown on the right of the plot as its on the edge of a wood and is slightly shaded.

One thought about that huge square bed to the top right of the pond. Looks very big. Do you have specific plans for it. I'd be inclined to divide it up a bit, either with a left-right path to make 2 beds about 4 squares wide or X paths to make 4 triangular beds.

Point taken veggie. I just thought there seems a heck of a lot of paths and my poor allotment neighbour who is keen as mustard but gardens traditionally will be gobsamacked at the ammount of paths already planned.

I may do as you suggest or break it up in some way.

You can take the the gardener out of the engineer but you can't take the engineer out of the gardener! Here was me trying to get away from geometric designs, potagers and suchlike, supposedly rebelling against formality and I've finished up with an Aztec carpet!

It could just make for an interesting winter of discontent and changes may occur!
