  • Chased the last of the three chickens which have went feral but the sneakky so an so managed to get onto one of the plots with a locked gate.

Took up the last of my Calabrese and gave thenm to the chooks. Weeded the bed then hoed the bed ready for planting my Senshyu onions.Knees were creaking a bit after yesterdays exertions so will plant them another time.

Took the wire surround off my Dauberton's kale and gave some of the sideshoots to the chooks. The smaller sideshoots I'll try rooting to increase my stock.

Down to bedrock now though so its hard going. I think I'll go a little deeper then break up the stony surface on the top. If i then add a sand/cement mix and add a bit of water, it should make instant concrete to seal the bottom!
Once concrete is set I can shutter the 'S' shape in the middle of the yin/yang and concrete the higher section. Its then just a case of plastering around the sides with waterproofed sand and cement reinforced with chicken wire ............................the theory sounds good but not sure it will work in practice!

I was going to plant my Senshyu Japanese onion plants in a bed I've prepared........but got waylayed!

Ideally yes, but realistically, no. I'm kinda hoping that the added depth of the deeper section will give a darkened look anyway?

Went to GC for onion sets and they only had plants. As I'm not too sure they will get off to a good start I will still pay another visit and get onion sets when they are in.

I have this stuff growing in various locations so Jay-el will have a lot to answer for if it turns out to be a waste of time. I'm looking forward to harvesting it!

How about this for a sweetcorn. This baby is 18 inches long with multiple heads on one cob!

Finally managed to catch the last feral chook on the site. I used guile this time and lured it by shaking a bucket of corn and throwing a small pinch, moving back and doing the same until I lured it onto my plot. After chasing it around the plot for a while I finally managed to lure it through the run gate and into captivity.

                    • Lots done at the scrapheap today.Planted pointy spring cabbage under mesh cloche.

Planted ball headed spring cabbage under wire frame.

Pulled up a pumpkin plant and a couple of courgette plants and fed the mini pumpkins to the chooks. Cut down three of the sunflowers which were leaning over at a precarious angle.
Did lots of weeding and fed the dandelions and docks to the chooks.

                      Planted out some black kale.

                      • Dug up the last of my Charlotte tatties which were massive but very tasty! Also for Sunday lunch was the curly kale and Mooli I harvested.

My Pork Chop or Yorkshire Pudding trees hadn't born any fruit so I had to go to the shop and buy these!

Where the tatties had been I dibbled in the last of my leek plantlets.

                        • Even the chooks are in hiding now when i turn up with another courgette/marrow for them.

I have a black chook who has went broody but jumps off the nest whenever I check the nestbox! I have put five marked large fowl eggs under her (I've got enough bantams) and a couple of blue Auracana eggs also marked with a pencil a couple of days ago.
When I arrived this evening the eggs were still warm so she must have went for a feed with the rest of them. I took two extra unmarked eggs from the pile she was sitting on.

Summer stuff is starting to die back on the scrapheap so I need to have a tidy up. I also need to source some japanese onion sets.

                              • Took six Dauberton Kale cuttings. Wasn't sure how to do this so I just did them like Chrysanth cuttings, pushed into compost through a layer of vermiculite on the top?::Stuck a white carrier bag over the lot to hold a bit of moisture and promote rooting.

Harvested some more courgettes including one large courgette/marrow which the chooks gobbled up.

Ate some more ripe blueberries (they never seem to ripen all at once) and munched on some peas which are beginning to look a bit ragged with white mould.

Progressed with the hole digging for the pond. Its hard going so just gets done in small batches!

Took one of my lemon trees indoors as we will soon be getting frost. The lemon tree already in the summerhous is full of flower and is giving off a lovely scent.

The chook thast isn't sure whether it wants to be a mother or not is still sitting on the seven eggs I put under her. Rather than disturb her I didn't have the heart to check whether any more eggs had been laid by the other chooks.
