Help me pick next year's tomatoes!

I'll stick my neck out here for Alicante, good taste, especially with beans (2 or 3 with a tin) rarely suffers from greenback and, well fed, should give a large crop of largish, thin skinned fruit.

I have grown Mountain Magic outside this year, it`s the first tomato other than basket tomatoes, that I have had fruit off, I also grew it in the greenhouse where it had more of a flavour and thinner skin also Ferline and like Pennellype grown as a cordon, I also had Garden Pearl in several baskets. Has any one grown Black Opal and if so was is any good, and Susie where do you get the Black Cherry seeds

I think Lottiedolly grew Black Opal this year and there are lots of Black Cherry seeds in the VSP if you'd like some, rary. Just say the word and they'll be in the post

Has anyone tried Millefleur? It sounds almost too good to be true...

I think my short list so far is:
Mum's "Not Gardener's Delight" (I was scoffing them all last weekend, they're just too tasty to pass up)
Black Cherry
Black Icicle (I think I have seeds, and they're amazing roasted)
Millefleur? (pending reviews )

That leaves one space; I could go for the Gardener's Delight I grew this year, or maybe a big ol' beefsteak type...?

Plus at least one blight resistant outdoor one... Go on, you persuaded me.

I tried millefleur one year. Lots of tiny toms - sweetie size. I wouldn't choose them as 1 of 5 personally.
Grew Ferline outdoors this year - blighted. Managed to salvage a few toms from 6 plants. Going to try Mountain Magic next year.
Plenty of Black Cherry toms in the VSP.

I'm kind of focusing on the 'lots'. I like tiny tomatoes, I tend to nibble on them down the plot- honestly, I think only about 1/10th of the crop made it out of the greenhouse this year... and only about 1/2 of them made it home.

Ferline a bush? Mine were grown as cordons.

Ah perhaps I'm thinking of something else. It's a while since I grew it. Got me thinking might try MM and Ferline at the plot to compare. Decisions, decisions.

If I could only grow one tomato it would be sungold, I also like Apero which is the best red cherry I tried this year.

For medium size tomatoes I like crimson crush, its early and the taste is very good.

For large Tomatoes for cooking I like Black russian but they can be funny to grow (maybe its just me)

At the blight front, Ive had a big attack if blight in my garden last 2 weeks, of the blight resistant varieties Ferline didnt seem to resist much, Crimson crush is effected but not badly and Mountain Magic looks if the only variety that hasnt been touched.

I do think Mountain magic is worth ago at the allotment, Im going to try it next year for sure.

I got some Rosella toms what was given to me by LD and they are really nice. Full of flavor.

I grew Black Russian for the first time this year ~ and they are a big, old bruiser of a tom ..... they were quite a spindly, small, slowish growing plant. But, once established they grew well and lots of huge beefsteak type fruits .....a very good flavour too - both sliced on a salad or sarnie and good cooked too ...!

Thats exactly what happened to me, It was very spindly with one massive fruit on, it seems the fruit sucked all of the energy from the plant, once I picked the tomato a while back the plant then grew quite robustly, it was a bit strange.

I grew purple calabash this year only one of 5 seeds germinated, but the flavour is fantastic. Will try and grow again next year.

I actually grew both Purple Calabash and Black Russian this year.

The Calabash had loads of flowers, and none set. The Black Russian had one fruit, but I'm not sure what it tasted like, the slug wasn't talking. Then both plants got blight and died.

I bought both as plants (from a local street stall, I was expecting them all to be Moneymaker or something!) so I don't have seeds, and based on that experience I'm not so keen on hunting them down...

As you have chosen your two small/ cherry types. An experimental/ try it out one. Then Black Icicle I would be tempted to go for another paste/ fleshy type like banana legs, striped roman or buffalo horn. Flavoursome enough for salads and sandwiches but great for cooking with.
