  • Saved beans to grow and cook

Climbing bean Cobra did well this year.

I have saved some seeds for next year along with some runner bean seeds.
The Cobra are beautiful black little jewels.
I assume they will grow next year ?

I have so many I might make some soup with them, but I remember a rumour about runner bean seeds being poisonous. But suspect they are OK cooked, is that correct ?

    Any good beany recipes ?

    Thanks
    Jimmy

They are "poisonous" if eaten without boiling first. All beans are the same. Actually my cousin was taken to hospital once for eating a load of raw uncooked runners while she was prepping them for the freezer -serious stomach cramps and violently sick for a couple of days..some peeps react worse than others.

They will be great for sowing next year

All beans need to be boiled hard for 10mins and then cooked for the required time to be safe. Been eating them for years and never had a problem.

And the Cobra, which I assume is a climbing French bean, will be a Cobra again next year (provided it's not an F1 of course) as French beans are self-pollinating inbreeders, while the runner bean is an outbreeder and will have crossed happily with all the other runner varieties around you. So you'll get runner beans all right, but not the variety you know, in fact it might even be pretty different depending on how many different ones were included in the mix
