  • Free spuds?

Having decided to turn my jungle into a veg/fruit plot, i have begun by digging up the mountain of weeds. In the process of doing this i am unearthing a number of redskinned potatoes, are these okay to eat????

Would have thought so. Try one on the wife first
It's not the growing old I mind but the growing stupid with it!

I'm sure that they'll be fine, JF - lucky you - and welcome to the Vine!

          Sure they're not sweet potatoes?

Any potato is a good potato (unless it has any green patches on it - these are poisonous). When you grow spuds you inevitably leave a few little ones in the ground when harvesting your crop, and you always end up with new potato plants growing the following year. If you operate a strict bed system you normally pull these up as soon as you spot them, but I've left a few plants in a spare area, just to see what they produce.

Could be red duke of yorks??
I would say they're fine to eat; frankly, even if they're a bit green from exposure I peel and cook them as normal - as I did with the freebies left over from last year's freebies!!

I'd think they'd be fine, as long as they are nice and firm with no soft bits or green patches. Enjoy the bonus!

Hi Jason & welcome. I take it you've not had the plot for long as you don't know what the potatoes are. If that's the case & they were left in the ground by the previous owner then they should be fine.Let us know what they taste like (if we don't hear from you we'll assume we were all wrong telling you to eat them!)
