Autumn broad bean sowing

I sowed mine much too early last year and they got very, very leggy. I left them be until early spring and then cut them back to around 3-4 inches - they grew back just fine.

Susie, netting might be helpful to protect against pigeons, though I've found a fleece isn't needed against frost (though that depends on variety I guess, I always sow aquadulce for overwintering).

Thanks WPG, can't remember what variety I've sowed ~ they were what I had left over from earlier in the year (must go have a look on the label when it gets properly light .....!)

I've got a couple of dozen already up. Been in the ground about 3 weeks and will be moved from the nursery bed in about a fortnight to thier over wintering and final growing bed.
There will be another sowing in the spring too.

How many beans should you get off each plant? I grew claudia schiffer last year and was scared the wind was going to knock down my canes so I went for sutton in summer and got 2 beans off each plant. They had loads of flowers on so I wonder what ate the small bean shoots? Sutton seems so close to the ground anything can have a go at it. I have put sutton in pots in the green house. Will try claudia schiffer outside again... claudia tasted better btw. Also going for douce provence (pea.)

Were your beans Aquadulce Claudia perhaps or is Claudia Schiffer wishful thinking?
