-The Long Winter Months- it's just a saying, isn't it...?
Isn't it just because the Winter Months are all so dark, dreary, cold and miserable that makes them seem so "Long"..................~~~ Gardening is medicine that does not need
a prescription ... And with no limit on dosage.

The earth is not a ball it's more of an orange shape, There the geoid ellipsoid separation, Magnetic North and True North and there are bound to be a few others also the earth has a wobble then the adjustment for the curvature of the earth so that the vertical and horizontal lines on maps are parallel which they can't be.
Blimey I must have paid attention in Surveying class.
So what does straight down really mean!
So I'm guessing the answer is no only heading south from the north.Last edited by Cadalot; 15-10-2016, 07:55 AM.

My take on the origin of "Long winter months":
Officially spring starts in March, summer in June, autumn in September and winter in December. However, because of the way the daylight and cold weather work slightly out of phase, it often feels like:
spring doesn't really get off the ground until mid April.
Summer often doesn't really start until July.
September is definitely autumn.
November can feel very much like winter because the clocks have just changed.
So we have 2.5 months of spring (mid April - June), 2 months of summer (July and August), 2 months of autumn (September and October) and 5.5 months of winter.

By the way, are we talking about Meteorological Winter or Astronomical Winter?
Meteorological Winter is December, January, February
Astronomical Winter is Wnter Solstice (21st December 2017) to Vernal Equinox (March 20th 2017)
So both are about the same lengths but they start on different dates.

Ooh eck ~ can tell you lot is posh..!!!
Me: local mixed infants/junior .......local big, no frills comprehensive, not expected to, nor indeed 'stopped on'.
Left at 16 for job as Office Junior. Took myself off to college (day release) passed RSA examinations in (now defunct Shorthand) and typing.
Later moved into retail and Mr H. Boots put me through an extensive Dispensing exam ........and that, as they say, is that ..........~~~ Gardening is medicine that does not need
a prescription ... And with no limit on dosage.
