  • Ailsa Craig Onions

I've just bought some of these seeds and have just read that you can sow them in the Autumn, in modules and indoors. Ready for planting out in the Spring.

I am going to give this a go but was just wondering how big the modules need to be and any other advice anyone might have?

        Cheers JJ

This month's GYO mag has got free ailsa craig onion seeds with it - I'll probably give them a bash this year.
        I've always just used sets.

I'm waiting on my onion sets and garlic to be delivered, but think I might sow the free Ailsa Craig seeds anyway...

I grew them from seed in spring and got small onions at best. The rest hardly swelled.

Honest! Not this year gone! Had personal blows "Blah Blah Blah"

But seed sown rather than set's! You will actually be Suprised as to the outcome, I will never plant sets again!

I've got to give it a go sowing a few in autumn and see what happens. That means i'll need to buy some compost though or maybe i could just use some out of my compost bin?

From the thread that JJ posted - Aberdeenplotter was advising to sow about now (I think )

Anyway, they'll be the first thing I sow when I get over to Ireland (roll on the 26th Oct).

I've got a couple of unheated propagators - I'll bung seeds in them and plonk them on the window sill for the Winter.

Ailsa Craig is a long day onion? I have to say I've only just found out onions need lots of sun or they won't bulb up. I've planted 4 in a sunny spot and am at least seeing strong leaves and a little bulb. It won't take long to beat my own personal record onion. My seeds were 60p from Wilko in there value range. I also bought student parsnip and icicle radish for the same price.
