  • Cabbage and psb plugs, permanent beds and.. Oh just lots of questions!

Hi all, having spent my first growing season bunging everything in and seeing what worked (unsurprisingly.. Not much!) I've done the following and am hoping some kind soul can tell me if I am beginning to learn - or going backwards.
I inherited raised beds from the last plot holder. Two I have covered in black plastic/fabric, one with raspberries planted through it and one with artichokes and fruit bushes, with sprinkler hoses underneath too. One I have dug over and covered with cardboard and then a layer of rinsed seaweed - but I've had conflicting advice about whether the seaweed should be on or under the cardboard. What do you think?
Finally (sorry, zillion questions) I dug over a bed, sprinkled blood bone and fish pellets, forked in a bag of compost and planted psb and cabbage plugs.
Do you think any of this will work? The other half of my plot is held by a crazily productive person and I think the committee might be regretting giving me a go!
Thanks in advance o learned ones

    A few comments.

Assuming that your black plastic fabric is not watertight, be careful how much you use the sprinkler hoses outside of the summer months as it would not be hard to flood the bed.

Cardboard and seaweed will both rot down - it probably doesn't matter which is on top, although the seaweed will weigh down the cardboard and may help it not to blow away over winter if it is on top.

Your cabbage and psb plants should be fine - you will need to keep an eye out for slugs and you may need to net them if pigeons are a problem on your plot. Brassicas like being planted firmly, so if you haven't done so when you planted them out it may help to go round and firm up the soil around them, either with your hands or a foot, depending on the size of the plants. Psb plants get very big and being planted firmly will help them stand up to the wind. Cabbages form better hearts in firm soil.

Ah thanks Penellype! I planted the plugs up to their first leaves, pretty firmly too. There's a gale blowing now though! The weed fabric stuff is waterproof I think, so I'll be careful with watering. Thank you - I'll leave the seaweed as is. Phew!
