I was wondering who had started getting their seeds for next year and whether you have or will be changing the ones you had this year.
I have learnt quite alot this year......we had a much bigger garden before moving here last November so some of my tried and tested varieties have had to be dumped in favour of dwarf etc.
We are now completely reliant upon very small raised beds, planters, MFB's and window planters - it's a bit of a nightmare but ever onwards.
Broad Beans - have not grown them for ages as they normally take up to much space but this year I grew Robin Hood which is a dwarf variety of yummieness. Two plants to a MFB - worked well. Far better that The Sutton which did not germinate (my fault). They grow quite short but do give lots of pods with an average of 6 beans in each. More seeds ordered Ta BM.
Runner Beans - tried the dwarf varieties Hestia and Jackpot in a smal raised bed - get get quite alot of beans but as the plants became uber bushy they became hard to find without moving the plant to and fro. Next year I'm back to the climbers Polestar, which I have grown before in 14in square planters (4 to a pot).
Peas - sugar snaps. This year it was Sugar Anne. Next year it will be Deliket. They were grown in under window baskets and were yummy but a bit late doing anything. Could be due to the baskets location.
DFB - This year was Purple Teepee. They got absolutely hammered by the slugs but I am going to try again in a very small (half metre square) raised bed as the G Son likes the purple colour.
Toms - I grew a few that were supposed to be more cold tolerant (no greenhouse) that was a mistake. However, the 4 hanging baskets (16 inchers) gave us enough Tumbling Tom red and yellow to fill the freezer, feed the neighbours and cook with. Next year no toms in pots just the baskets.
Carrots - Nantes 5, Eskimo and Artemis in MFB's did really well. I might have a go at rainbow carrots next year to keep OH and Grandson amused.
No more beetroot, turnips, spinach etc due to lack of space.
Spring onions (White Lisbon), lettuce (Little Gem) and radish (French Breakfast) will all be grown in to window planters.
I suppose all this waffle is just to show the growers who are very short of space, like us, that anything is possible.
Oh and 2nd earlies - Charlottes - large pots - yummy
