  • Have You Started Yet?

I was wondering who had started getting their seeds for next year and whether you have or will be changing the ones you had this year.

I have learnt quite alot this year......we had a much bigger garden before moving here last November so some of my tried and tested varieties have had to be dumped in favour of dwarf etc.

We are now completely reliant upon very small raised beds, planters, MFB's and window planters - it's a bit of a nightmare but ever onwards.

Broad Beans - have not grown them for ages as they normally take up to much space but this year I grew Robin Hood which is a dwarf variety of yummieness. Two plants to a MFB - worked well. Far better that The Sutton which did not germinate (my fault). They grow quite short but do give lots of pods with an average of 6 beans in each. More seeds ordered Ta BM.

Runner Beans - tried the dwarf varieties Hestia and Jackpot in a smal raised bed - get get quite alot of beans but as the plants became uber bushy they became hard to find without moving the plant to and fro. Next year I'm back to the climbers Polestar, which I have grown before in 14in square planters (4 to a pot).

Peas - sugar snaps. This year it was Sugar Anne. Next year it will be Deliket. They were grown in under window baskets and were yummy but a bit late doing anything. Could be due to the baskets location.

DFB - This year was Purple Teepee. They got absolutely hammered by the slugs but I am going to try again in a very small (half metre square) raised bed as the G Son likes the purple colour.

Toms - I grew a few that were supposed to be more cold tolerant (no greenhouse) that was a mistake. However, the 4 hanging baskets (16 inchers) gave us enough Tumbling Tom red and yellow to fill the freezer, feed the neighbours and cook with. Next year no toms in pots just the baskets.

Carrots - Nantes 5, Eskimo and Artemis in MFB's did really well. I might have a go at rainbow carrots next year to keep OH and Grandson amused.

No more beetroot, turnips, spinach etc due to lack of space.

Spring onions (White Lisbon), lettuce (Little Gem) and radish (French Breakfast) will all be grown in to window planters.

I suppose all this waffle is just to show the growers who are very short of space, like us, that anything is possible.

Oh and 2nd earlies - Charlottes - large pots - yummy

Yep! Can safely say this year is well n truly behind me!

If "Getting Started" means digging out seed tins, going through what I have, selecting is this a go or no go, what do I need, what wants either passing on or binning! What if? What about? Maybe not! Then again? It could work! But that space needs clearing, Oh! And that wants moving there! And that just needs a little TLC, sure it will be fine next year!

No! Nowhere near on "Getting Started"

Lumpy - I started get seed for next year last year. As a result of hopefully having a greenhouse on each plot and the spacesaver at home plus hopefully more of my second plot in place by next season quantity will increase and new varieties will be tried at different locations. In addition my eldest daughter now having her own home, I shall be growing for us and her and her partner, in addition to all the relatives and neighbours we supply with veg.

Defiantly more Butternut squash but I'm thinking about growing them around the two beds of sweetcorn on each plot and perhaps another couple of varieties of squash. Twice as many sweet corn Swift on one site and Lark on the other. All Onions and Spring Onions on Spencer Rd and none on Mill Green because of the white rot problems there. Stuff that needs less looking after on Mill Green unless the pick up and drop off area is completed by the contractor by then.

You have me thinking and I may have to put all my thought and plans down in writing as I sort it out on a new page on my blog.

Surprisingly I have all my seed for next year. There is always time to get a few more .
The only reason I'm short of space in my garden is because I have no will power when it comes to buying seeds

You could still grow spinach, there's lots of varieties of baby spinach that would do very nicely in a MFB.

I picked up most of what I needed at the Wyevale 50p sale. Just a few 'specials' still to get - plus anything else that catches my eye between now and Spring

Unlike previous years I an NOT going to try any weird and wonderfuls (we will see then won't we) but I do know a couple of things for certain.

I want a bigger garden - as if

Don't plant your parsnips in the raised bed on the edge of the garden path because as you walk past you can break off the top growth.

Don't leave youe expensive Ruby Beauty raspberry under the acquired apple tree because the rain does not get to it.

I don't have room for pumpkin/squash even the smaller bush varieties.

Courgettes - nope don;t like them.

Need to find more space so out of the box thinking needs to be done.

Seed tapes are a god send.

The Kings allotment catalogue is circulated around the end of August, early September and is actually a good time to stock take whilst the memory is still fresh. Even ordered my potatoes!

Yes, been planning for a couple of months now and have got most of my seeds, although I do keep buying extras when I have new ideas.

You should be able to grow some spinach. The trick is not to space it as they say on the packet, which in my experience is very wasteful of space. These were my 2 varieties of spinach - Amazon in the cold frame in a 2ft square saladgrow planter, and Red Vein in a 1ft by 2ft trough. I sow the seeds fairly thickly and harvest a couple of the biggest leaves from each plant as they grow. There was more here than I could eat:

Started? Don't think I ever stopped - it's always an on-going process. In fact I've already got onions planted for the year after.

I am in seed catalog consulting mode - I am not counting the seeds already bought when holidaying in France this summer - various types of salad (including dandelion!) - I will start them in pot and plant out to give them a chance to live and not be gobbled up straight away by the slugs.

Things I will do again (in addition to the salads, which i so miss right now!)
                        - radishes (French breakfast + various others) but will respect the succession sowing of a little bit every two weeks...
                        - cucumber. This year 2 plants gave me plenty. They were Prima Top (had to build a climbing frame!)
                        - courgette. one will be enough in a pot! ('All Green Bush')
                        - carottes. Like the radishes in succession planting as i now have quite a lot waiting to be eaten! Great result with F1 resistafly, yellowstone and samurai. f1 purple sun did not do anything (not counting the 2m high leaved!)
                        - tomatoes. F1 Crimson Crush, San Marzano and Noire de Crimee were success. Yellow Stuffer and Coinable less so. I will try cherry ones so am avidly reading all the discussions on them
                        - beetroot. Love them all. Boltardy, Chioggia, Pablo, Burpees Golden and Cylindra. Can't have enough

Not sure I will do onions again or shallots. Am trying garlic now hoping the slugs won't eat them like they did the last batch...
                        Nature is amazing

Bought ones are all done, just my swapsies and circles to do. My seedy cut off for next year is 14th Feb so plenty of time to think of more

I just get strange whimsies that end up materialising in the seed filing cabinet. No planning needed.
