growing dandelions as a veg.

Has anyone tried growing the dandelion as a veg. as they are high in a number of nutrients such as potassium (contains more than a banana) calcium, iron, thiamin, magnesium as well as others, I have some in the garden, and it would appear that they self seed quite easy so I was wondering if they are so rich in nutrients would it be worth while culivating them. I know you can blanch them to avoid some of the bitterness from them, but is it worth while using the ones from the garden, or if I do cultivate them would I be better to find a seed supplier

There are some cultivated varieties with broader leaves - you may have to get them from the continent. You can also get dandelions with pink or white flowers.

The ones in your garden should be ok as well

I read about these the other year and it said the cultivated ones were less bitter, but if you're using a dressing it wouldn't be as noticeable I'd think.

I have seeds for culinary dandelion if you want 'em rary?
I got them through a seed circle so I don't know what they are, but they aren't the kind of thing I grow.

They are sold dried in bags at the supermarket for pet nibble treats.

I think they're beautiful. Lovely for the bees early in the year too.

I reckon that if dandelions were harder to grow they'd be grown more often as veg, James Wong would have renamed them Golden Fluffs and Sutton would be flogging the "Lost Veg" seeds at £5 a packet.

They are good for chooks and have a natural mild worming effect on them! They are a mild diuretic for humans though!

Don't whatever you do mix them with Fartichokes or else you'll not know which end to hold first!
