storing potatoes in mesh?

Hi,

I've not really managed to find any cheap potato sacks so was thinking that I would try to fashion a holder from some flexible plastic mesh that I have. I was hoping this would let them dry out suitably?

I would have thought that that would be ok as long as you are storing them in the dark.....for brown paper potato sacks, try your greengrocer. Ask nicely and they may give them to you!

Or try the old fashioned method which I intend trying for the first time this year, storing in a clamp!
I stored some in paper sacks last year but also used strong cardboard boxes to good effect!

Have you tried E bay UK for potato sacks. I know one seller has 50 x 25kg bags for £12 approx. Also has 7.5 kg sacks.

Does your council collect recycle compostable material?

As well as everyone having a composting wheelie bin our council also sells large paper sacks for any additional compostable rubbish. They charge 25p for these. Not sure how strong they are - but I'll find out in the autumn as these are what I'll be using.

Someone on ebay is selling used hessian sacks that have been used for coffee. I like the idea of recycling but would the coffee taint the spuds?

If it's only coffee bean, give the sacks a good airing and the smell should dissipate, I would have thought.

With hessian sacks, you need to make doubly sure you are storing the spuds in a dark place as hessian sacks are not totally light proof. You do get better air circulation that with paper sacks though.

Just a suggestion, try asking at your local pet shop, I got some really good double paper sacks that had been used for bulk supplies of bird seed and sunflower seeds, ideal for storing potatoes and all for free.

not free, but cheap...get thee to a fabric shop and buy the cheapest thickest cotton you can find and sew/glue/staple it into bags. Like the ones that Lakeland sell for a hundred squid
