  • Elephant Garlic

A friend on the plot gave me a dozen elephant garlic which I popped into a spare patch of earth straight away with a bit of chicken pellet.
I seem to remember reading a comment that they aren't all that flavourome - which is why I've not bothered with them before. Is this correct or am I mis-remembering?

I have found that they are very mild in flavour and won't keep as long as 'normal' garlic.

The ones I had this year were cut in half then baked - yummy.

I have heard some people complain of a bitter after taste, although I haven't noticed this myself. I like them roasted whole then suck out the insides.

I've been given two cloves by someone on the allotment but how do I know if they are for Spring or Autumn planting as he has not been around to ask.

If you plant it in spring It may not get big enough and the clove may just turn into a large round. I think they also need the cold to split into cloves.

I plant my elephant garlic in September usually. I'd plant asap if you haven't already., it's a must have crop for me. They are milder than garlic but still have a lovely taste, I roast, use in stir frys as an alternative to garlic, use in sauces etc. Often stick in the pan whole with the roasting meat and mash one up in the sauce - the others are served on the plate whole, ready to have their insides sucked out

I skewer all sorts of food, then stick them over on flames

I love elephant garlic - similar to garlic but milder and sweeter & something else I can't quite describe - almost a sweet smokey flavour. I eat it as a veg in its own right. V fond of adding it to a ratatouille or roasted like an onion & stir fry of course.

well worth growing - bung it in ASAP - needs a long cold season.
