  • Squashes with naked seeds

Do these all have a lower seed count than 'normal' squashes?

I've just opened up a Kakai (thanks NG for seeds!) and, after I'd eaten the very few I'd nicked with my knife (standard practice in Sparrow Towers) there are just 53 seeds inside. I've never known a squash to have fewer than 100 seeds, particularly not a large one.

Am feeling like this is something of a swizz - that's not enough for even half a packet, though they do taste lovely.

Can't help sparrow sorry, but I've been experiencing something similar. All the squashes and pumpkins I've had so far this year have had very few fully matured/ viable ( big fat ) seeds in them. Most of them have been flat and small. Now you mention it not as many as normal either. I'm very disappointed, not been able to do my caramelised roasted pumpkin seed yet .

Oo-er, whilst Lady Godiva and Kakai didn't have stupid amounts of seeds last year, each fruit certainly had enough to cover a baking sheet. I did try to grow Miranda this year but I lost the plants early on but can't remember why. Have you got many fruits? Just wondering if all the fruits will be like it

I've got one other, half the size though and still ripening. The slugs ate 7 baby fruits so I could have had more I guess. Will grow again next year, but annoyingly this one was for a seed circle and now I only have enough for about 2 seeds each!

Lots of these are grown in the area I live in. Probably not Kakai though, but local varieties. I haven't ever counted the seeds in them, but I'll try to do it if I ever get the opportunity. I have seeds of several varieties in my stash for the comparison trial I've been thinking about for a few years but haven't got around to doing yet. Maybe next year.

I tried eating the de-seeded part tonight - if this is any help to someone else, don't bother. It twins stringiness with a surprising lack of flavour.

Here the farmers appear to de-seed them in the fields and leave the pulp behind to rot. I passed by one of the fields yesterday in a bus, and saw piles of pulp where there once were pumpkins. So definitely don't bother trying to eat it. I wonder if hens or pigs would like it. They don't keep very long either.
