Check the packaging, my daughter asked why I could not grow potatoes like TESCO and I found in very small print the variety and the grower printed on the bag. If they are F1 they may not grow true but saying that I have had great success growing F1's and still getting close to the original. Give it a go what have you got to loose?

Tomatoes to me seem a much easier gamble. They don't take up that much space (unlike squashes) and if they have crossed you might have less of a disappointment than with crossed squashes or chillies.

I'm not stalking you honestly Sparrow but I also think seeds saved from shop tomatoes often produce well...yes, they maybe F1 and not come true to the parent but you have a decent chance of getting something decent to eat. Just don't put all your eggs in one basket and sow a few other varieties too.
