Yeah I got confused ( easily done!). It's Alberto's Locoto that has the black seed, they're both on the same real seeds web page.

      • a couple more chillies harvested. Including my very first padron.
There's also cayenne, joes long, Thai dragon, big Thai, chocolate hab, yellow scotch bonnet, lemon drop, newmex twilight, basket of fire, ring of fire, spike, rooster spur, fetalii jigsaw, Dorset naga, black naga and purple tiger. Think that's it.

Interesting that your Elysium Oxide F7 is red. Mine (can't remember if you sent me F6 or F7 seeds) is yellow. I was expecting mustard or rust colour but it's just yellow. Only one plant fruited. Nice enough but I'm not sure it's any better than the SB MoA, which has been a better producer.

The other plant just kept growing upwards and I had to hack it down when it hit the ceiling. Thought that would make it bush out but it just started going up again, and I had to cut it down again. Eventually I stuck it outside where, due to the cold wet grey late summer, it's only just flowering, so no chance whatsoever of getting pods as temperatures are already way too low.

Yes, the Elysium Oxide is supposed to be red or red/rusty as you say, although I have also heard of Mustard variants. The one pictured is one of my best plants this year. Large, vigorous, early and productive, with a great Scotch Bonnet type taste. Hot, but not superhot like one of the varieties used in the original cross.

It's possible your plant came from a cross pollinated seed or another seed or plant mix up. Or random genetics from what is still an experimental hybrid. I also have an MoA, which I like, but my red Elysium Oxide F7 is definitely bigger, stronger, more productive and more intense flavour and heat. I don't think either of us are growing enough plants of each variety for a fair comparison, so it's a bit of a lottery and all part of the fun

I think my F7s are as expected and will grow again. I'm saving what will be F8s from the pods pictured above. I would recommend if anyone wants any seeds.

Also, here's a picture of an F4 from this variety from the grower who grew the original hybrid cross.

                • You aren't isolating your seed are you Chris? I only save isolated seed these days, I've found that chillies rarely come true if not bagged or isolated and always loose their heat.

'Rarely come true' 'Always lose their heat' Really?

You already know from my contributions to other threads, including your 2016 seed circle, and my 2017 Seed Giveaway, that I do some isolating and some not. But even when I'm not fully isolating, I generally save seeds from the earlier pods, which are the least likely to have cross pollinated.

Chillies can and sometimes do cross pollinate, but in terms of Biology, they are largely self-pollinating. With non-isolated seed, my experience over many years and many different varieties has been different and much more positive than yours. I have also been given or swapped non-isolated seed with other growers, with similar results, i.e. the majority have grown true. And when they don't, that's all part of the fun for many growers

I suppose everyone is different but varieties are important to me, saving pure seed is too, not just for chillies but other veg as well (also traditional breed chickens - but don't start me on that one! ), I don't like diluting the strain, the differences can take years to raise their heads. I like swapping seed and with the time and effort involved, the nurturing for the best part of year, the space in the greenhouse they take up, I like to know what Im growing. I've had some serious disappointments from crossed seed.........

                            • Here's a really good artical explaining how genetics and cross pollinating of chilli peppers work. Its worth a read. Explains how the F1 plant will have the same colour fruit as the original but over time how the mother/father parentage traits begin to show.
